Congenital Heart Defect
Congenital Heart Defect
- 1 out of 110 children are born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD). It is one of the most common birth defects in the United States but we still do not always know why.
- These defects can be detected in utero during an ultrasound, after being born in the nursery with pulse oximetry testing or by your pediatrician listening to the heart.
- Certain defects can be corrected as a catherization procedure, where they enter into the groin, and repair the defect by an Interventional Cardiologist. Other CHDs, will need open heart surgery by a Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon to repair. Once surgery is completed, they are repaired or corrected but never "fixed."
- The more critical defects can require multiple surgeries and these children will always need to be followed by a cardiologist. To all those who are 1 in 110, Stay Strong and we wear red for you!
